Committee Advances Three Bills to Support Workers and Retirees
WASHINGTON – Today, the Committee on Education and Labor advanced three bills that would improve the quality of life for workers and retirees: The Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act, H.R. 397, the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA), H.R. 1230, and the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, H.R. 1309.
“The three bills under consideration this morning reflects our commitment to ensuring that all Americans have access to safe workplaces where they can work free from discrimination and retire with dignity,” said Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott.
The Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act, also known as Butch Lewis, prevents the imminent catastrophic collapse of the multiemployer pension crisis while protecting retirees’ benefits and saving taxpayers billions of dollars.
The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA) ensures older Americans can work free from discrimination. POWADA fixes the unreasonably high standard for proving age discrimination so that victims of discrimination can hold companies accountable. Under POWADA, the burden of proof for age discrimination would once again be consistent with discrimination based on sex, race, and national origin
The Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act protects health care and social service workers from preventable acts of workplace violence. The bill forces the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to issue a standard requiring employers to implement violence prevention plans, which are proven to reduce workplace violence.
