Chairman Scott Statement on the Nomination of Marty Walsh for Secretary of Labor

WASHINGTON  Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after President-elect Biden nominated Marty Walsh to lead the Department of Labor (DOL).

“I congratulate Marty Walsh on his nomination to be the next Secretary of Labor. With Mr. Walsh’s experience in the Laborers’ Union, Massachusetts’ House of Representatives, and most recently as the mayor of Boston, I am confident that he will restore the mission of the Department to ensure that Americans can obtain meaningful employment, fair pay, a safe workplace, and a dignified retirement.

“Even before the pandemic, working families were working harder than ever, yet struggling to make ends meet. Now, our nation continues to endure a deep economic crisis, and the absence of federal leadership has allowed a public health emergency to balloon into an economic crisis of historic proportions. Just today, the Department announced that for 42 consecutive weeks, initial unemployment compensation claims have exceeded the record number of claims of any previous administration. As we work toward a fair and sustainable economic recovery, Mr. Walsh’s expertise and dedication to public service will be invaluable.”
