Chairman Scott Statement on the Nomination of Dr. Miguel Cardona for Secretary of Education

WASHINGTON Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after President-elect Biden nominated Dr. Miguel Cardona to lead the Department of Education (ED).

“I congratulate Dr. Miguel Cardona on his nomination to be the next Secretary of Education. Dr. Cardona has over two decades of experience serving in America’s public schools— first as an elementary school teacher and then as a school principal, assistant superintendent, and most recently as Connecticut’s Commissioner of Education.

“The pandemic has exacerbated the effects of chronic underinvestment in our public schools, and as COVID-19 cases surge across the country, students and educators continue to face unprecedented challenges. Existing achievement gaps are widening, crumbling school infrastructure threatens the safety of our nation’s children, and a mass transition to remote learning is causing tremendous learning loss. What’s more, budget cuts, along with revenue and job losses, mean severe reductions in services and programs that many vulnerable students need to complete their degrees and find fulfilling careers.

“I look forward to working with Dr. Cardona in our shared belief that high-quality, public education is invaluable to the success of individuals and our nation. I am fully confident in his ability to lead the Department in its mission of educational equity for all.”
