Chairman Scott Statement on the Nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for Secretary of Health and Human Services

WASHINGTON  Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after President-elect Biden nominated California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“I applaud President-elect Biden’s nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. Becerra has an extensive career from serving in the California General Assembly, the U.S. House of Representatives – including as a Member of the Education and Labor Committee – and, most recently, fighting on behalf of Californians as the attorney general.

“As we continue to confront the worst public health emergency in recent history, our first priority must be the health and wellbeing of all Americans. I maintain full faith and confidence that Attorney General Becerra will protect the Affordable Care Act, fight to end inequities in our health care system, and flawlessly execute the Biden administration’s plan to crush this virus. To support our most vulnerable communities, I am confident Becerra will address our nation’s crumbling child care system, improve the lives of people with disabilities, and strengthen support for seniors.

“I look forward to working with the Biden administration’s health team – a group of dedicated public servants prepared to combat our nation’s most pressing health care challenges during this critical time. We are united in our belief that improving the health, safety, and well-being of our country is fundamental to rebuilding a strong economy.”
