Chairman Scott Statement on Oral Arguments in the Affordable Care Act Case

WASHINGTON – Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on this afternoon’s oral arguments in the Texas v. United States case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.

“Today, Republican attorneys general and the Trump administration are once again asking a court to strip access to affordable health care for millions of Americans. Legal scholars from across the ideological spectrum agree that this latest challenge to Affordable Care Act is legally frivolous, but the potential impact on Americans is catastrophic. At risk, in this latest attack, are the protections for patients with preexisting conditions, the prohibition on insurance companies setting annual and lifetime caps, and the Medicaid expansion that helped 17 million Americans gain coverage.

“By siding with the Republican attorneys general, the administration is failing to fulfill its fundamental responsibility to faithfully execute the laws of the nation and, in doing so, it is threatening the health care of millions of Americans.”
