Chairman Scott Statement on June Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 850,000 jobs in June with the unemployment rate at 5.9 percent.

“Today’s jobs report is further proof that the Biden-Harris economic agenda is delivering results for the American people. Since President Biden took office, the economy has created more than 3 million jobs and consumer confidence has soared to its highest rate in 21 years.

“However, while the American Rescue Plan provided immediate relief to workers and families and accelerated our economic recovery, our communities are still facing severe challenges. Even after today’s report, we remain more than 6 million jobs behind where we were in February 2020, and while some workers are experiencing the benefits of a stronger economy, many others are still struggling to provide for themselves and their families.

“The American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan are bold proposals that will create millions of good-paying jobs now and set us on a path toward stronger economic growth in the future. These plans make overdue investments in our physical infrastructure while also investing in the foundation that Americans need to succeed. Helping workers and families access essential services – such as affordable child care, healthy nutrition, and high-quality education and job training – is as important to the future of our economy as any road or bridge in America.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues to deliver a once-in-a-century investment that will build back a better America for all workers and families.”
