Chairman Scott Statement on Injunction to Protect Women’s Access to Contraception
WASHINGTON – Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after a federal court in Pennsylvania granted an injunction to freeze Trump administration rules that would allow employers and institutions of higher education to deny women coverage of contraception based on “religious or moral” objections.
“By issuing a nationwide injunction, the court has taken the necessary and immediate step of shielding workers and students from a harmful and discriminatory policy that would restrict coverage for preventive services under the guise of religious freedom. Freedom of religion is a sacred and fundamental right, but it is not a tool to deny women access to health care.
“The Affordable Care Act (ACA) made affordable, comprehensive health care available to millions of Americans. The Trump administration’s attempt to undermine that progress by attacking protections for contraceptive coverage is a threat to the health and safety of women across the country. Democrats are committed to ensuring that the administration does not succeed in this effort – or any other effort – to erode Americans’ access to quality health care services.”
