Chairman Scott Statement on February Jobs Report

WASHINGTON  Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 379,000 jobs in February with the unemployment rate at 6.2 percent.

“Even as we begin to see the end of this pandemic on the horizon, the impact of COVID-19 on workers, families, and businesses will be felt for years to come. Despite today’s jobs report, the economy remains more than 9 million jobs behind where we were at the start of the pandemic.

“The American Rescue Plan – which passed the House of Representatives last week – will help spur job growth and get millions of struggling Americans back to work. It also provides immediate relief to our communities while setting the stage for a strong, shared recovery. According to one estimate, passing President Biden’s COVID-19 package would accelerate our economic recovery by a full year and result in 4 million more jobs in 2021, alone.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe and disproportionate impact on low-wage and middle-class workers, particularly women and workers of color. We cannot settle for a recovery that leaves hardworking people and their families behind. The American Rescue Plan makes the necessary investments to finally defeat the virus and provide our constituents the relief they need and deserve. Today’s jobs report underscores the urgency of getting this bill on the president’s desk.”
