Chairman Scott Statement on EEO-1 Form Compensation Data Report
WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) released a report assessing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) historic pay data collection efforts from certain private sector employers and federal contractors for reporting years 2017 and 2018. The report found that the pay data the EEOC collected, which provided establishment-level data on the earnings paid to employees, can help address pay disparities on the basis of sex, race, and ethnicity.
“Today, women earn, on average, 83 cents on the dollar compared to men in similar jobs. The wage gap is even worse for women of color, and it exists across every sector, regardless of education, experience, occupation, industry, or job title.
“Today’s report from the National Academies found that the EEOC’s expanded EEO-1 pay data collection is helpful for identifying pay disparities, boosting enforcement efforts, assisting employers with self-assessment, and providing a broad description of pay practices.
“However, if we are to realize the goal of pay equity, we must do more to ensure that this pay data is robust and reliable. As the National Academies found, the EEOC’s pay data provides valuable insights, but the EEOC must take additional steps to ensure that its data is complete. More information is critical to addressing inequity in pay, and the report from the National Academies lays out a roadmap for important improvements to the EEOC’s pay-data collection efforts."
