Chairman Scott Praises Proposals in American Families Plan to Expand Paid Leave

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after President Biden released his American Families Plan, which invests in providing workers with paid leave protections.

“Paid leave protections are critical for ensuring that workers do not have to choose between their paychecks, their health, and the health of those around them.  Yet, during the worst public health crisis in recent history, the United States continues to be one of the only countries in the world that does not guarantee its citizens a single day of paid leave.

“The American Families Plan draws on the Committee’s efforts to expand paid leave protections to the workers who need them most.  In addition to providing 12 weeks of paid leave, the proposal would allow workers to take paid time off—not just to care for their own physical health—but to care for a newborn or a loved one, grieve the loss of a loved one, find safety from sexual assault, and tend to other important needs.  I applaud President Biden for listening to workers’ calls to consider expansive paid leave in this proposal.  I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Administration to provide all workers with the protections they need to care for themselves and their loved ones.”
