Chairman Scott Calls for the Passage of the Heroes Act

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott issued the following statement after House Democrats introduced a fifth legislative package—the Heroes Act—in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

“As result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our students and schools are facing unprecedented educational and financial challenges, our workers are experiencing unemployment rates not seen since the Great Depression, and our public health care system is straining to meet the demand for testing and treatment of this deadly disease.  While the relief bills enacted so far took steps in the right direction, the magnitude of this pandemic demands far more relief for individuals, families, and communities.

“The Heroes Act is a comprehensive federal response that matches the scale of this crisis.  It provides nearly $1 trillion in state and local funding to avert mass layoffs of teachers and first responders; requires the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to establish emergency safety and health protections for workers, who continue to fall ill and die from preventable COVID-19 infections; and protects access to health care for the millions of workers at risk of losing their insurance along with their jobs.

“If we wait to address the full scale of this crisis, the financial and human cost of inaction will continue to rise. This emergency relief legislation is one in a series of actions necessary to provide the American people the support they need to make it through this difficult time.”
