Chairman Scott Applauds Gov. Northam Proposal to Increase Funding for Safe School Reopenings

WASHINGTON – Chairman Bobby Scott released the following statement in response to Governor Ralph Northam’s proposal to dedicate $500 million in American Rescue Plan funding to help schools repair and upgrade ventilation systems, or complete other air quality projects.

“I applaud Governor Northam’s proposal to dedicate additional American Rescue Plan funding to helping schools reopen safely and stay open safely. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that proper ventilation is essential to reducing the risk of COVID-19. Providing school districts the funding they need to improve air quality and repair or upgrade ventilation systems will go a long way to making classrooms safer for students, educators, and school staff.

“As Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, ensuring that the American Rescue Plan delivered significant support for Virginia’s school was one of my top priorities. I was proud to vote for a relief package that included $2.1 billion for K-12 schools across the Commonwealth. The Governor’s proposal highlights the important role that the American Rescue Plan continues to have in helping students get back into the classroom and get back on track.

“I hope that Members of the General Assembly and State Senate will quickly approve this proposal, which will allow schools to make important investments in the health and safety of their schools.”
