Chairman Scott Applauds Biden Administration Plans to Fix Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

WASHINGTON Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement in response to press reports that the Biden administration is planning major fixes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

“For three years, my Committee repeatedly implored the Trump administration to address the glaring issues with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Unfortunately, despite hearings, letters, and public statements, the previous administration refused to take meaningful action.

“I applaud the Biden administration for taking the necessary steps to keep our promise to nurses, teachers, first responders, and other public service workers. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program was not designed to be a puzzle or a contest. It was designed as a tool to recruit talented people into public service and recognize their contribution to our communities. I am particularly encouraged that the Biden administration is planning immediate changes that will provide timely relief to borrowers who should be entitled to loan forgiveness, as well as long-term changes to ensure the program works better in the future.

“This is the comprehensive and sustainable solution that student borrowers deserve, and it will be a major victory for thousands of nurses, teachers, first responders, and other public service workers.
