Chairman Scott Applauds Biden Administration for Protecting Workers’ Civil Rights
WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Biden-Harris Administration proposed rescinding a Trump-era rule that gutted nondiscrimination protections for employees of federal contractors.
“I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for taking this important step to restore civil rights protections for federal contractor employees. The Trump Administration’s religious contractor rule gave companies receiving taxpayer dollars the power to hire and fire employees for discriminatory reasons under the guise of religious freedom. Under the Trump-era rule, a wide range of workers – including LGBTQ Americans and pregnant workers, or even those with differing religious beliefs – could be denied a job or abruptly fired without cause.
“Civil rights laws are intended to protect the victims of discrimination, not empower those who seek to discriminate. By proposing to reverse the Trump-era rule, the Biden-Harris Administration is making clear that the federal government is committed to protecting a worker’s right to earn a living free from discrimination.”
