Bonamici Responds to Hiring of For-Profit Official to Lead Enforcement Unit

Congresswoman calls on U.S. Department of Education to Put Students First

WASHINGTON, DC [08/30/17] — Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Vice Ranking Member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, spoke out on behalf of students after the Department of Education announced it hired Julian Schmoke Jr., a former official from DeVry University, to lead the Student Aid Enforcement Unit. The unit is tasked with policing fraud and deceptive practices in higher education.

“American students deserve to know that the Department of Education is going to be fighting for them. I am deeply disappointed in the Trump Administration's decision to hire a former for-profit college executive to lead the Student Aid Enforcement division at the Department of Education. The Student Aid Enforcement Unit was created to protect students from fraud and to hold colleges accountable for providing students with a quality education that leads to good-paying jobs. This appointment is the latest sign that we cannot trust the Department of Education under Secretary DeVos to put students first. The Administration should return its focus to investing in our students, making college more accessible and affordable, and fighting fraudulent and predatory for-profit colleges.”
