Bonamici Defends Consumer Protections for Student Loan Borrowers
WASHINGTON, DC [03/01/17] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), the Vice Ranking Member of the Education Committee, stood up for student loan borrowers as the House passed a bill that threatens important federal protections for borrowers.
The Searching for and Cutting Regulations that are Unnecessarily Burdensome (SCRUB) Act creates an unbalanced process for repealing federal rules and jeopardizes important protections for workers, families, and the environment. Bonamici offered an amendment to protect struggling student loan borrowers by safeguarding critical rules that provide relief for borrowers who are misled by institutions that fabricate job-placement figures or close their doors unexpectedly. Bonamici’s amendment failed on a party line vote and was not included in the final bill that passed the House today.
“The SCRUB Act is the wrong way to make policy,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “The White House and federal agencies already regularly review rules and regulations. Creating an unelected commission that could rescind critical consumer protection rules threatens the rights of student loan borrowers and working families. I’m disappointed that the House rejected my provision to protect student loan borrowers who have been misled by unscrupulous institutions.
“Last night the President told Congress his vision about improving our nation, but today it's business as usual. The American people want a strong economy and a secure future, not fewer consumer protections.”
