Blunt Rochester Statement on Trump’s Budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL), a member of both the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Agriculture, issued the following statement on the proposed budget from President Trump:

“While President Trump’s proposed budget should reflect our values, strengthen our economy and improve our quality of life, it, unfortunately, serves only to undermine and weaken the future of working families. Slashing funding for education and agriculture programs is an indication of the President’s shortsightedness and lack of vision for a future where all Americans are given an opportunity to thrive.

“Education is the foundation upon which our children build their lives, their careers and our future, yet the President sees no harm in slashing loan forgiveness programs or work-study programs. Agriculture produces more than $8 billion in economic activity in Delaware alone, yet the President sees no harm in axing subsidies for crop insurance. Whether it’s helping to give students the ability to pursue a degree or helping our farmers insure their crops, these programs help sustain and grow our economy over the long-term. This budget, however, immediately threatens our food supply, undermines our ability to build a skilled and talented workforce and hinders long-term economic growth.

“Our future depends on the investments we make today, that’s why I plan to work with my colleagues to approve a budget that makes smart investments in a brighter, stronger future for all Americans.”
