Chairman Scott Statement on September Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after theBureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 263,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent.

“Today’s jobs report shows that Democrats’ economic agenda is meeting the needs of students, workers, and families.  Since President Biden took office, the economy has added, on average, 500,000 jobs each month. Let’s contrast this to the Trump Administration. Throughout the Trump Administration, the economy lost, on average, 52,000 jobs each month. Even before the economic downturn spurred by the pandemic, the economy added, on average, 186,000 jobs each month—63 percent less growth compared to the Biden Administration. The contrast is stark.

“Our nation’s economic growth during President Biden’s Administration did not happen by accident. Throughout the 117th Congress, Congressional Democrats advanced legislation that put people over politics. We added over 10 million jobs to our economy since January 2021 (the most jobs added in any president’s first 21 months); recovered 100 percent of the jobs lost during the pandemic; reduced the unemployment rate to historically low levels; and saved the pensions of over one million workers and protected thousands of businesses from closing. This is historic progress.

“As we head into Indigenous People’s Day, I remain committed to ensuring every American—including American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Other Pacific Islanders—benefits from the growth of our economy. I am particularly pleased that this is the first Indigenous People’s Day where the monthly jobs report includes data on the employment status of both American Indians or Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) and Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders (NH/PI). By including these employment measures, we are better able to assist these communities in accessing rewarding careers.

“I look forward to continuing my work with the Biden-Harris Administration and my colleagues to grow an economy from the bottom up and the middle out.”
