Ranking Member Scott Statement on June Jobs Report

WASHINGTONRanking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 147,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate ticked down from 4.2 percent to 4.1 percent.

“Since taking office five months ago, the Trump Administration has continuously prioritized the ultra-wealthy over the needs of working people.  Instead of addressing the cost of groceries, housing, and health care, the Trump Administration has slashed government services that help workers and pursued policies that increased costs such as tariffs and immigration initiatives.

“Adding insult to injury, Congressional Republicans are currently trying to force through the ‘One Big Ugly Bill,’ which sacrifices the health coverage of over 17 million Americans to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.  A recent report found that for every millionaire who receives a tax break from this bill, 19 Americans will lose their health care.  President Trump and Congressional Republicans want to make devastating cuts to our social safety net programs while the cost of living continues to rise, and the wealth inequality continues to expand.

“June’s jobs report shows that we are at a critical moment.  We cannot abandon working Americans by slashing their health care, education, and access to food.  Democrats are committed to fighting this dangerous legislation, prioritizing paths to economic mobility, and putting workers over billionaires.”

Background: During former President Biden’s first five months in office, the economy created 2.9 million jobs.  In President Trump’s first five months in office during his second term, he has created 671,000 jobs.  Under former President Biden, the economy added 16.1 million jobs in total and did not have a single month of seasonally adjusted job loss during his entire term.  Former President Biden created more jobs during his tenure than any Republican president, whether they served four or eight years.  Former President Reagan created the most jobs of any Republican President on record—16,128,000 in eight years—which is still less than the16,140,000 jobs created during former President Biden’s four years.
