Ranking Member Scott Statement on April Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 253,000 jobs in April, as the unemployment rate ticked down from 3.5 percent to 3.4 percent. Since taking office, President Biden has created 12.7 million jobs.
“Our economy remains historically strong under President Biden. The unemployment rate is still near record low levels, our job market is continuing to grow, and workers are seeing higher wages. This a direct result of the victories the Biden-Harris administration and Congressional Democrats have delivered to create high-quality jobs and help Americans get back to work.
“In contrast, my House Republican colleagues are weaponizing the looming default on our nation’s debt to force through proposals that threaten our economic progress and strip critical support from the people who need it most. Just last month, House Republicans passed—with four Republican votes in opposition—Speaker McCarthy’s debt ceiling proposal. The Default on America Act risks triggering a potential recession—costing our economy 780,000 jobs—and inflicts cruel cuts to vital programs for students, patients, hungry families, and older Americans. This is a terrible deal for the American people: either eliminate jobs and reduce support for working families or destroy the economy.
“I remain committed to opposing this bill—or any effort to gamble with our nation’s full faith and credit—and working with my colleagues to secure a brighter future for working families.”
