Scott Statement on March Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 236,000 jobs in March as the unemployment rate fell slightly from 3.6 percent to 3.5 percent. Since taking office, President Biden has created 12.6 million jobs.
“In January 2021, at the beginning of President Biden’s term, the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent. And now, according to today’s jobs report, the unemployment rate is approximately 3.5 percent—one of the lowest in history.
“The first two years of the Biden administration were, respectively, the first and second largest job growth years in American history. This recovery did not happen by accident. It is directly connected to the leadership of President Biden and Congressional Democrats.
“Unfortunately, during the House Republicans’ first few months in the majority, they prioritized divisive legislation that threatens our economic progress and does nothing to help Americans get ahead. They also continue to use our nation’s full faith and credit as a bargaining chip to force devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare. By threatening to default on our nation’s debt, Congressional Republicans are gambling with the economy in every community in order to force through an unpopular and dangerous agenda.
“Regardless of the political challenges, I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance solutions to help every American succeed while also upholding our commitment to fiscal responsibility.”
