Ranking Member Scott Statement on March Jobs Report

WASHINGTON Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 228,000 jobs in March, and the unemployment rate rose from 4.1 percent to 4.2 percent. During President Biden’s first two months in office, the economy created 1.3 million jobs, so far Trump has created 345,000. Over the course of President Biden's term, seasonally adjusted job creation averaged 336,000.  Under President Biden, the economy added 16.1 million jobs in total and did not have a single month of seasonally adjusted job loss during his entire term.

“Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has shown a complete disregard for the welfare of American workers.  His reckless economic policies, including his disastrous tariffs, have caused significant harm to our economy, pushing us toward a recession.  During President Trump’s first term, the economy lost an estimated 189,000 manufacturing jobs and lost a total of 2.7 million jobs overall.

“Following the tariffs announced this week, businesses will be facing huge amounts of uncertainty as they consider where to invest, risking significant job losses and slowing down the economy.  Tariff increases could be passed on in the form of higher prices to consumers and families at a time when many families are already struggling to make ends meet.  These kinds of careless actions put American workers at risk.

"Instead of focusing on policies that lift up working families, he continues to drive us toward a deeper economic crisis by sowing chaos and undermining our institutions.  One of the more egregious actions taken by this Administration is the decision to rescind the $17.75 minimum wage for federal contractors— an order initially put in place by President Biden to ensure workers doing business with the federal government are paid fairly.

“The Trump Administration has shown a particular disdain for federal workers, who provide essential services to keep our country running.  Last week, President Trump stripped federal workers in national security agencies of their right to collectively bargain, a blatant attack on their job protections and wages.  This undermines workers who have dedicated their lives to serving our country.

“We must reject the Trump administration’s reckless policies and fight for an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthy few.  It’s time to stand up for workers, protect their rights, and demand that the Trump Administration reverse its harmful actions before any more damage is done.”
