Ranking Member Scott Seeks Answers on DOGE's Access to Sensitive Data

The breach may include sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, and other private data of millions of Americans.

WASHINGTON – House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) is demanding urgent action after reports that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has gained unauthorized access to sensitive data at the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and Labor. Ranking Member Scott raised serious concerns that DOGE's actions could violate the Privacy Act of 1974, which protects Americans' personal data.

In his letters, Ranking Member Scott outlines troubling reports that, according to news reports, DOGE has gained access to Americans sensitive personal information, including Social Security and driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, and contact details gathered from health records, student loan information, and workplace safety data.

"The recent actions by DOGE pose significant risks to the privacy and security of sensitive data that affects millions of Americans.  The full extent of the breaches is still unknown, and I urge agency leaders to provide clarity and take immediate steps to ensure that all personal and confidential information is adequately protected,” Ranking Member Scott continued.  “The public deserves transparency and accountability, and I will continue to press for answers until these concerns are fully addressed."

Ranking Member Scott is calling for a full accounting of DOGE’s access to sensitive data, as well as details on the agencies’ authorization and security measures in place to protect personal and confidential information.
