Chairman Scott Statement on January Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 225,000 jobs in January with the unemployment rate at 3.6 percent.
“During his State of the Union address, President Trump touted his administration’s record on job creation, claiming that ‘jobs are booming, incomes are soaring, poverty is plummeting.’ Yet the economy added more private-sector jobs in the last 35 months of the Obama administration than in the first 35 months of the Trump administration. The unemployment rate fell more rapidly during the Obama administration than the Trump administration. And stock market gains were greater during the Obama administration than the Trump administration.
“President Trump continues to take credit for the economy he inherited and for the impact of state and local minimum wage increases that his Republican colleagues oppose.
“House Democrats are working to build a stronger economy where everyone can succeed. Yesterday, we passed theProtecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which strengthens workers’ right to negotiate for higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions. This is the most significant upgrade to U.S. labor laws in 80 years.
“Workers should have the power to stand together, form a union, and negotiate for a fair share of the profits they produce. Instead of continuing to block pro-worker legislation, the Senate should empower workers and pass the PRO Act, the Raise the Wage Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and other House-passed bills that put workers first.”
