Scott Statement on January Jobs Report

WASHINGTON  Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 517,000 jobs in January as the unemployment rate ticked down to 3.4 percent. Since President Biden took office, the economy has created more than double the average number of jobs each month compared to the Trump administration’s pre-pandemic performance.

“Today’s jobs report is further proof that Congressional Democrats’ and President Biden’s economic plan is working. Moreover, we learned that the economy created more jobs in 2022 than originally reported—bringing additional job growth under President Biden’s record highs. It is no surprise that recent polling shows that more Americans trust President Biden and Democrats in handling job growth and the economy. Let this be a lesson to the GOP: when we invest in students, workers, and families, America succeeds.

“Unfortunately, during House Republicans’ first month in the majority, they prioritized divisive legislation that does nothing to help everyday Americans. They also continue to use our nation’s full faith and credit as a bargaining chip to force devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare. House Democrats reject that extreme agenda and remain committed to protecting and building on the economic progress we made last Congress.”
