Ranking Member Scott Statement on December Jobs Report

WASHINGTONRanking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added only 50,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate ticked down from 4.5 percent to 4.4 percent.

“President Trump’s second term is marked by his failure to deliver on his promise to lower costs and reduce unemployment. Since President Trump returned to office, the economy has experienced three months of job loss and only created only 473,000 jobs. Moreover, 2025 was the worst year for job growth in this country since Trump’s first term in office. During President Biden’s first 11 months in office, the economy created 6.9 million jobs. Additionally, under President Biden, the economy experienced 48 consecutive months of job growth.

“Working Americans are struggling to pay their rent, put food on the table, or afford a visit to the doctor. And Congressional Republicans and this administration have only made these problems worse. Reckless tariff policies have hiked up the price of many goods, Americans are seeing their health insurance premiums spike, and the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on unions and labor standards threaten the health, safety, and financial security of the American people.

“For example, last year Congressional Republicans blocked the extension of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax cuts, causing health premium costs to skyrocket and putting coverage out of reach altogether for others. When more people lose coverage, costs go up for everyone. Uninsured patients often delay seeing a doctor and end up needing even more costly care at the emergency room. When there are more uninsured patients, hospitals, especially in rural areas, face financial hardships and may even be forced to close. In other words, those unpaid costs do not disappear—they are shifted onto everyone else.

“Thankfully, House Democrats forced a vote yesterday on the extension of these tax credits. It is now up to the Senate to take up this bill and provide relief to millions of struggling Americans.”
