Scott Statement on June Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement today after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 287,000 jobs during the month of June.

“Today’s job report represents the 76th consecutive month of private sector job growth – extending the longest streak on record which was previously set in April 2000 at 51 months. Despite these economic gains, too many working families are still struggling to make ends meet.

“Unfortunately, just yesterday, the House Appropriations Labor-HHS subcommittee passed a spending bill for fiscal year 2017 that ignores the struggles of working families. That bill would prevent implementation of crucial measures that will improve the lives of working Americans, such as the extension of overtime protections for workers and retirement savings protections for workers and their families. Among other harmful provisions, the bill also cuts funding for critical education and training programs, such as Pell Grants and teacher quality grants, and it erodes the ability of the National Labor Relations Board to protect the rights of workers.

“We know we can do better. Just this week our Committee unanimously passed bipartisan legislation to strengthen career and technical education to provide students and job seekers with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to succeed in today’s competitive job market. I am optimistic that we can continue in this spirit of bipartisanship to better ensure that hardworking Americans and their families have the opportunity to prosper. By working together, we can boost wages, help workers to better balance work and family life, and create opportunities to level the playing field for all.”
