Ranking Member Scott Statement on March Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 103,000 jobs in March, with the unemployment rate at 4.1 percent

“On average during President Obama’s last full year in office, the economy added roughly 195,000 jobs a month, far more than the 103,000 jobs added last month. While it is encouraging that the latest jobs report shows that our economy remains relatively stable, there is still work to be done to sustain job growth and make investments that actually benefit working families.

“Unfortunately, the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans continue to push policies that hurt hard-working Americans.  The most egregious of which is the recent enactment of a $1.5 trillion tax cut that primarily benefits wealthier Americans and, according to reports, will create fewer than 400,000 jobs.  On the other hand, a robust investment in infrastructure, education, or health care could create well over ten million jobs.  The shortsighted decisions made by the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans threaten our country’s long-term economic success and stability.”
