O'Halleran Introduces Resolution to Support Higher Teacher Pay and Education Investment
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran introduced a resolution, cosponsored by more than 100 members of the House of Representatives, to honor teachers on National Teacher Day, support higher teacher pay, and call for increased investments to public schools.
“Our teachers and school staff are shaping the next generations of American workers and leaders, and they should have the tools they need to do their job. Unfortunately, as Arizonans have seen over the past week, years of cuts to public education have resulted in low pay, too many crumbling schools, and teachers forking over their hard-earned dollars for basic classroom supplies,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “As the Red for Ed movement has demonstrated, enough is enough. Congress and states must step up and support funding for public education, and there is no better day to make that commitment than National Teacher Day.”
The resolution affirms that the House supports teacher salaries that are comparable to the salaries of other college graduates in the state and urges the federal government and states to increase investment in instruction, classroom materials, and services available within public schools.
“There is no reason that teachers across America should be some of the lowest paid professionals in the workforce. Their jobs are critical to the economic vitality of our country,” continued O’Halleran. “We must to do more to support our educators and the staff in public schools.”
The resolution is supported by the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association.
