Chairman Scott: Biden Budget Makes Long-Term Commitment to Our Nation’s Students

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement in response to the release of President Biden’s “skinny budget,” which calls for a $20 billion increase for Title I education funding, a more than 200 percent increase compared to the current fiscal year.

“Inequity has always been a defining characteristic of America’s education system, and the wide funding gaps that exist between schools in neighboring communities constitute a major reason why students do not have equal access to a quality public education. President Biden’s proposal to more than double Title I funding would take a giant step toward strengthening our nation’s schools and fulfilling the promise of educational equity for students across the country. The budget also includes new funding to help schools implement voluntary efforts to address school segregation.

“The budget request recognizes the urgent need to make higher education more affordable for students and families.  The proposal expands eligibility for Pell Grants and increases their value, and it directs additional funding to traditionally underfunded institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, Minority-Serving Institutions, and community colleges.

“The president’s budget makes a bold, long-term commitment to education that our students, parents, and educators deserve. I applaud President Biden for prioritizing education in his budget and I look forward to working with the Administration and my colleagues to secure a sustained investment in our nation’s schools.”
